Dental Health: Dental Bridge Benefits

The dentists use dental bridges to fill the gap between the teeth. When there is one or more tooth missing from the mouth, then the bridges fill in the gap, giving your mouth a complete look. The bridges can be made with two or more crowns depending on the requirement and each are anchored in the place of the missing tooth, thereby filling in the gap. The false teeth that are used are called pontics and may be made from gold, porcelain, or ceramic. Here are some dental bridge benefits.

  • They restore your smile that may be looking bad due to the missing tooth.
  • They restore the ability to chew properly and speak. A missing tooth can cause you the discomfort while eating and chewing.
  • They help you maintain the shape of the face.
  • They help in distributing the bite forces evenly by replacing the missing teeth.
  • They prevent the remaining teeth from being damaged and provide additional support.

Dental bridges are available in following types:

  1. Traditional Bridges

The traditional dental bridges use a crown that is directly planted to the missing area. They are the most common type of implant that is used by the dentists. The crowns used in the procedure are made by ceramic or porcelain.

  1. Cantilever Bridge

These types of bridges are used when there is an adjacent tooth available next to the missing teeth. They are not in use anymore and are not recommended by the dentists. They require too much of the force in the installation of the crown and may damage the other teeth.

  1. Bonded Bridges

These bridges are made from porcelain and the gums are supported by a metal frame work. They provide additional support to the teeth and are bonded by the next existing tooth.

Process of getting a dental Bridge

Before you start to take the procedure, make sure that you have appointed a good dentist to do the process for you. Dentist starts by inspecting the area of the lost tooth and makes additional room for the crown by removing any excessive gum formation. The imprints of the teeth are taken to make the exact model. The crown is made in the dental lab and the dentist temporary makes a bridge to support the teeth while the bridge of the size is being made.

When the bridge gets ready, the dentist calls you for the second visit and the temporary bridge is replaced with the new one that is an exact fit. The new bridge is adjusted and the fit of the metal framework is checked for the bite. You may require several visits to the dentist depending on the condition of your missing tooth. After installing the bridge, it is cemented into the place after couple of weeks. Always remember to follow the instructions given by the dentist after the installation to make sure proper care is given to the new crown.
